4 Mar - Jazzie B - LCF

Union Black is London College of Fashion's ongoing series of events that celebrates, showcases and promotes black British fashion talent through the power of music. Crowning Glory March 4th 2009, 6-8pm, FREE Venue (please note venue change!): LIME GROVE BOOK YOUR PLACE Jazzie B, founder member of Soul II Soul has long espoused '.a happy face, a thumpin' bass, for a lovin' race' but the politics governing black hair are as complicated as the variety of hairstyles on display. Crowning Glory will be hosted by music journalist and lecturer Jacqueline Springer and features edited performance, news and music video footage. London College of Fashion is pleased to invite Jazzie B to explore the cultural 'rules' surrounding black hair and its fashioning. Students with an interest in fashion styling are advised to attend in order to gain an understanding of the cultural, religious and stylistic differences governing Rastafarians, Funki Dreds and those sporting dreadlocks, locs and twists. What are their distinctions within black culture? As black music, culture and beauty continue to assimilate into the mainstream, what does mainstream society need to acknowledge when adopting styles that have a cultural and religious basis? Why are artists who sport 'natural' hair deemed 'blacker' and more authentic than the artists sporting chemically treated or artificial hair? And where do artists of mixed parentage stand in this 'war' of visual consciousnesses? Union Black's Talking Heads sessions are presented in association with Contemporary Black Music Culture.
